Evergreen trees; branchlets dark-brown, young branchlets and leaves violet- or yellowish-haired.
Leaves lanceolate, broadly oblanceolate to oblong, 9–13.5 cm long, 2.2–3.5 cm wide, acuminate or acute at apex, acute or cuneate at base, entire or loosely serrulate, coriaceous, midrib concave above, elevated beneath, lateral veins 9–12 pairs; petioles 1–1.8 cm long.
Staminate catkins or spikes, ca. 8 cm long; Staminate flowers 2.5 mm long, 2.5 mm wide; perianth 5–6-lobed, very hairy outside, nearly glabrous inside; stamens 5–6, filaments 1.8 mm long, anthers 0.7 mm long. Pistillate flowers 2.2 mm long, 2 mm wide; perianth 4–5-lobed, very hairy outside; ovary 3-celled, styles 3.
Cupules cup-like, 1.2–1.8 cm long, 2.2–3.8 cm across, woody, with irregularly wavy or flattened rim, scales in 8–10 concentric rings, golden-yellow-tomentose outside;nuts ellipsoid, 2–2.5 cm long, 1–1.5 cm across, violet-brown.
